How Hydra Works

From question to answer.

Every Hydra case follows the same discipline, whether it takes a week or a season. Seven steps, one standard of verification, and a client who always knows what is being done, what has been found and how confident we are.

The method

Trust comes from method, not from promises.

Clients instruct Hydra because the answer has to hold when it is tested. That is a property of how the work is done, so the way we work is the same on every case, in every jurisdiction and at every scale.

A case begins with a question and ends with an answer the client can act on. Between those two points sits a sequence of steps that does not change: contact, assessment, investigation, verification, analysis, reporting and, where instructed, action. Each step has a purpose, a person responsible for it and a defined output. Nothing moves to the next stage until the previous one is complete.

The discipline exists for the client's benefit. It means you are never left guessing. At every point you know what is being done, what has been found so far and how confident we are in it. When facts change, you hear about it before the final report. When an avenue closes, you are told, and told why.

The same method applies whether the matter is an investigation, an intelligence requirement, a due diligence assessment or a question involving digital assets. The disciplines differ. The standard does not.

The seven steps

One sequence, followed on every case.

Some steps take an afternoon. Others take months. The order and the standard applied at each stage are the same regardless.

  • 01

    Contact

Tell us what is happening. The first conversation is confidential and carries no obligation on either side. You do not need to have the question fully formed; helping to define it is part of our work.

  • 02

    Assess

We determine what can realistically be established, how, in what timeframe and at what cost, and we set this out in writing before any work begins. Where something cannot be done, or cannot be done lawfully, we say so at this stage rather than discovering it on your account.

  • 03

    Investigate

Analysts, investigators and specialists work the case across the relevant disciplines under a single case lead. Analysts build the picture from records, documents and open sources. Investigators take the enquiry to people and places. Specialists in finance, technology and digital assets join where the question demands it.

  • 04

    Verify

Information is cross-checked against appropriate sources before it is relied upon. Where a fact cannot be confirmed from records, we verify it in person, in the jurisdiction concerned. A single source is a lead, not a finding.

  • 05

    Analyse

We connect the people, companies, events, locations and digital information into one picture. Analysis is where separate facts become an answer: who is linked to whom, what happened in what order, and where the gaps and contradictions lie.

  • 06

    Report

You receive clear findings and actionable conclusions, written for the decision you have to make. Every finding is graded as verified, reported or unverified, so that you can see at once what rests on official records or first-hand confirmation and what does not.

  • 07

    Act

Where appropriate, we support the next stage through field operations, specialist partners or relevant professional advisers. That may mean recovering property, securing a location, preparing evidence for counsel or introducing forensic accountants and local investigators. The report is not the end of our involvement unless you want it to be.

Principles

What does not change from case to case.

Six commitments that sit beneath every engagement, whoever the client and whatever the question.

  • 01Lawful and proportionateOur methods are lawful in the jurisdiction concerned and proportionate to the question asked. Sources are publicly available, licensed or lawfully obtained, combined with human enquiry and, where needed, physical verification. We do not hold or claim access to restricted police, government or intelligence databases.
  • 02Verified, not assumedHydra distinguishes verified official records from allegations, rumours and unverified online information. The availability of official records varies by jurisdiction, and our reports state clearly where a fact has been confirmed and where it has not.
  • 03Confidential by practiceConfidentiality is built into how the work is done, not added afterwards. Case information is held on a need-to-know basis, communicated through secure channels and never discussed outside the engagement.
  • 04Written for the decisionA report exists to let you decide. Findings are written in plain terms, ordered by relevance to the decision in front of you, and prepared with the people who will test them in mind.
  • 05One team across disciplinesHuman, digital and field intelligence are brought together under a single case lead. You deal with one senior point of contact, not a series of departments.
  • 06Honest about limitsWe do not guarantee outcomes. Where an avenue does not exist, or would require methods we will not use, we say so plainly, before work begins and again if the position changes during the case.
The engagement

What an engagement looks like.

Clients often come to us at a difficult moment. The structure of the engagement is designed to give certainty about the process, even when the facts are still uncertain.

  • 01Scoping and a written proposalThe question, the approach, the timeframe and the cost are agreed in writing before work begins. No open-ended instructions.
  • 02An agreed reporting standard and timetableYou know from the outset what the report will contain, how findings will be graded and when you will receive it.
  • 03A single senior point of contactOne person is accountable for the case throughout and is available to you directly.
  • 04Interim updates when facts changeIf a finding alters the picture, or an avenue closes, you are informed at the time rather than in the final report.
  • 05A final report and, where instructed, support for next stepsThe report answers the question asked. If you want us to carry the matter forward, we do so through field operations, specialist partners or your professional advisers.
  • 06Secure channels throughoutCommunication and the transfer of documents use secure, agreed channels from the first conversation to the last.
Before you start

All enquiries are treated confidentially. An initial assessment does not guarantee that Hydra will accept the assignment.

Acceptance depends on three things: whether the work can be done lawfully, whether the question can realistically be answered, and whether Hydra is the right firm to answer it.

Start a Case

Tell us what is happening.

An initial assessment is confidential and without obligation. We will tell you what can realistically be established, and how.
